Good to know

  • IMPORTANT CORRECTION vs. a common assumption: Australia's current official policy is a near-total ban on glasses in passport photos (verbatim: "You must not wear glasses in a passport photo unless you can't remove them for medical reasons — vision impairment alone is not an acceptable reason to wear glasses in your photo"), NOT a more lenient 'allowed if no glare' policy. Medical exceptions require a signed certificate/declaration at lodgement; this pushes Australia's glasses policy much closer to the US/Canada pattern than initially assumed.
  • Editing/retouching is explicitly and strictly prohibited (verbatim: "even small edits like smoothing skin, brightening the background or removing shadows can affect the accuracy of biometric checks"), reinforced in practice by a DFAT 'clean & rescan' rejection policy (asking applicants to retake rather than accepting a digitally cleaned-up photo).
